By Ghazanfar Azzam,
Reviving an economy requires more than just a surface-level approach. Restoring the purchasing power of the middle and working classes is pivotal for sustainable growth. Here's why:
1. Consumer Spending
The middle and working classes are key drivers of demand for goods and services. Without sufficient purchasing power, this demand dwindles, impeding economic recovery.
2. Economic Multiplier Effect
Increased disposable income for these classes fuels local businesses, spurring investment and job creation, fostering a positive economic cycle.
4. Social Stability
Addressing economic inequality and enhancing purchasing power is crucial for maintaining social harmony, averting unrest that can disrupt economic progress.
5. Investment and Innovation
A thriving middle class cultivates entrepreneurship and innovation. Financial security is essential for entrepreneurs, as it encourages new businesses and innovations, vital for economic vibrancy.
6. Revenue Generation
Enhanced purchasing power leads to higher consumption, translating into increased tax revenues. These revenues can be reinvested in infrastructure, education, and healthcare, further propelling the economy.
Restoring purchasing power often involves policy interventions like wage hikes, tax relief, essential goods subsidies, and social welfare programs. These measures are fundamental for a resilient and sustainable economic resurgence. Unfortunately, our policy makers and people in power are moving in the opposite direction if we see the tone and direction of the new budget. Where are they leading us to? It's, as they say, is a million dollar question....
